Default New findings related to Cannabis

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19372456

"An international team found those who started using cannabis below the age of 18 - while their brains were still developing - suffered a drop in IQ."

"The more that people smoked, the greater the loss in IQ."

My initial thought was 'Is it because they're more likely to get kicked out of school? Is it a correlation without causation?'

Other than this speculation, from reading the article this fulfills all the criteria I know of for a valid study- oh and the women just explained they isolated that variable I was talking about.

Yes it appears to be a valid conclusion that cannabis is the cause of this damage to cognitive processing, the journal it was published in checks out as reliable, being peer-reviewed, as well. [good news by the way, they make all articles free to read after 6 months, so we can actually read the data in half a year]

    Raar!

I had a feeling there was some damage being caused by Cannabis that wasn't officially known up until now.

Makes sense to me. I have had friends and relatives whom where very intelligent and I have seen there work quality and grades drop since they started taking cannabis. They didn't stop, they just slowly seemed to stop, if that makes sense.

Eh, I know someone who's started smoking when they were 16 and currently still does and honestly, they're one of the smartest people I know. (This person is in my class with me and I've known them a while, they currently actually have the highest test scores in the class >.>)

Though I guess I should read the article you linked before I post my opinion

No reason why they couldn't be more intelligent if they didn't smoke.
Also if they don't smoke a lot it wouldn't have such a large effect anyway.

I thought this thread would have exploded by now; usually cannabis threads do.

Here's another article with links to studies. A suggested mechanism for the difference in changes to IQ if cannabis is smoked before or after 18 is that the human brain is pruning redundant connections in adolescence, so psychoactive drugs or other impressionable experiences could change the extent and nature of this process.

IQ does vary in adolescence, so cannabis could be just one factor that can influence these changes.

A friend of mine who did some weed told me the only problem he had during the time he smoked weed that his concentration level was low.

I know that, but lower concentration also thinks influences your intelligence so I tried to bring in some personal info to confirm that this could be true.

By the way, this study refers to the street cannabis available in Newzealand, the precise affects of modern cannabis variants, like skunk, on long term cognitive abilities are not included.

Skunk additionally has a different ratio of active ingrediants, however.
