Thread: Common PC misconceptions

  1. #21
No matter what your computer genius friend who has an Alienware PC says, you probably don't need 16GB of ram. Also no matter what he says, he's not actually a computer genius if he has an Alienware PC.

    How about 100 fans?

Depends which way they're facing. If they're all pumping air out, you're not going to achieve much.

Another one: A virus is very unlikely to be slowing your computer down. Most modern viruses are designed to not be found, if they slowed down your computer they'd be easy to find, and therefore remove. Almost all the time when your computer is slow its because you installed a load of dumb programs which are making it slower.

And yet another one: the amount of files you have on your computer is not what's slowing it down, it's the amount of running processes (and how they are eating everything). Sure, there's a point in which files make a difference, but that's usually not the case.

I have a question, are i7 processors always better than i3 and i5 processors?

    another one:
A server isn't a computer. It is a piece of software which is designed to talk ( c: ) with the clients (also software).

EDIT: actually it can depend on the context, argh never mind... waiting for nikc's or ax6's reply

    Its both!

You can have software, like Apache web server or Unreal IRC server, which are designed to serve information to clients, or you can have hardware, as in a box which has server parts in it. Server parts are usually different in that they usually value efficiency and reliability over raw speed.

In a word, usually. However, make sure you're comparing the right thing. There are dual core i7s that are in ultrabooks, but they will be much slower than even an i3 that is on the desktop.

Giving your computer a few rams, will not make it go faster. In fact you risk breaking your computer if you hit it too hard.

It's OK to use the abbreviation “PC” to refer to a certain kind of computer hardware, but please don't use it with the implication that the computer is running Microsoft Windows. If you install GNU/Linux on the same computer, it is still a PC.

The term “WC” has been suggested for a computer running Windows.

not true, actually. a pc is a computer running any OS other than mac. a mac computer isn't a pc, they're made entirely differently. it's like if tw companies make the same exact kind of bubble gum, they're still not the same brand.

Right, because a Mac isn't your Personal Computer, it's Apple's Computer.

No, he's correct, Macs ARE PCs. A little bit of history. It all started in 1981 with the IBM PC, and has continued to this day. For most of that time, Macs differed from PCs in that they used PowerPC CPUs instead of the x86 chips used in PCs, but in 2005, Apple moved all their computers to x86, thus making the only difference between a mac and a PC now the brand name.

    Here are a few:
"Deleting System32 doesn't benefit you in any way. Unless of course, you wish to delete files from the OS."

"Alt+F4 closes the current window if on a Windows computer (Not sure about Macs and I am pretty sure Linux doesn't function like that)."

"Ctrl+W is a command to close the current tab on a web browser if on a Windows computer."

"Macs do have a right click: you can set it under the mouse options tab or just hold down the 'Control' key and left click."
