Thread: Religion's role: Public schools

    Default Religion's role: Public schools

How are different religions presented in your school [assuming it is a public school]?

Do you agree with this current stance? Why or why not?

In general, I think public schools ought to educate students about all different types of religions, in a way that respects each religion and treats everyone fairly. Cultural exposure is good for you ;D

"Study one religion, and you're hooked for life. Study two religions, and you're done in an hour."

That being said, religion is definitely a significant aspect of humanity and can be studied for further understanding of cultures and lifestyles, provided that it's universal and not just a focus on one idea.

Definitely not. I'd hate to be in a public school, and not only have to sit through one religion you may not like or be able to bear, but multiple. I go to a Catholic school, and this isn't a problem, aside from the fact that I've rec ently become agnostic. Idk, but studying Catholicism doesn't bother me at all, since, in my eyes, it's extremely easy to learn and apply.

The point is, it isn't supposed to be like a Catholic school. Learning about the origin of the religion, the followers, the morals, getting an understanding of it and the history that comes with it. There's nothing forceful about it; it's education, for your own good.

I agree, my previous school only taught christianity, and non-believers got punished.

Multiple religions should be covered in-depth, in my opinion. It helps us understand them and the culture of the world.

It's supposed to be like history class. The more you get exposed to this stuff, the more understanding you have. That goes towards learning anything and everything. History, religion, ancient civilization, whatever, all these subjects give you more understanding of other cultures and kinds of people in the world, and how they live and such. I think it's good, of course.

Yes, but strong regulations should be in place according to how they are taught.

My school taught a whole bunch of religions, I think that's the best way to do it because otherwise people think that their religion is the only one out there.

Here in Norway religion is not pushed onto the children as in some other countries. We have 1 hour each week where we learn about all the different religions, but we don't learn how to worship them, why to worship them nor that we should worship them. We are taught, for example, the life of Jesus according to the bible, but we are never ''taught'' that he is our God and that we have to worship him, we are taught that christians worship him. Religion class also shares it's time with life stance and ethics. I like the system as it is now, as it lets the children act on their own rather then acting based on what the school tells them.

In my primary and junior schools we were almost exclusively taught about christianity, there were manditory prayers and hymns, etcetera.

However in my secondary school we learnt about a variety of religions from a neutral perspective and if we had views on those religions were encouraged to justify them. I felt that was superior in every way.

    Raar!

We do not tak about religion.
I get bashed on a lot for being atheist.
You go to church to learn about religion
School prepares you for college so you can lead a "successful" adult life

no i dont think so because u can go to a catholic school for that or just go to church, its called a public school for a reason many different cultures attend to it it would suck if only one religion was discussed while the other ones were dismissed :/

Well I went to a private school from kindergarden to middle school and all it talked about was catholicism except a few exceptions in Social Studies

Now im in a public high school and we learn about all sorts of religions in Global classes.

This year im taking AP EURO so I will probably learn about more.

In my school we were taught about five different religions, not very in depth though, of course Christianity was the most in depth and the teachers tended to refer to Christians as "we" which I detest. I do think that religions should be covered in school, basically what Nikolaj said:

I went to both a private and a public school... and wasn't taught a single thing about religion. Dunno if it's good or bad, but I do agree it's way better than forcing a religion onto children...
