Thread: Try out my new game demo!

Default Try out my new game demo!

Edit: Music is now in the game! The music in this game was created with Sunvox.

Hey, I'm making a game that's currently in progress that's like a platformer version of Motherload. I need people to come test out what I've made so far so I can see if I'm heading down the right path, so I thought "why not show it to the people on JV?".

Here's a link if you want to try it:
    Click

    screenshot time!

Please comment on any bugs you find, as well your impressions about the game.

If you want to, try answering these questions:

from 1-10, how would you rate the gameplay in this game?

how would you rate the graphics/artwork?

how would you rate the interface? (things like menus and stuff)

what was the funnest part of the game? (exploration, fighting, ect)

what part of the game did you not like?

was there a time you wanted to quit because the game was too boring?

was there a time you wanted to quit because the game was too hard?

    Thanks!

What is this? I feel like there are now game developers EVERYWHERE. I am constantly seeing new games. I am glad, but only if they're good developers.

There more game devs the better > more chance of great games being introduced in the future.

Also, did you actually make this game yourself?

Prety cool. The graphics are nice but the hero sprite is kind of boring. Needs animation. The displays of health and inventory and whatnot could use better graphics. The tiles are great.
    I liked exploring.
Fighting and fuel were annoying. I think my attacks should be more powerful.

The game needs music and sound. Usually those are really high on my list because I get bored easily without them. I know it's in progress and you're probably planning on adding that soon. So far so good, I'd just recommend polishing the interface graphics and the character animations and fighting.

Just been playing it, couple things I'd like:

    > bigger character, he's too small in my opinion
    > limit to the jetpack or bubble jump thingy (x key feature)
    > (optional to the above opinion) you take fall damage of some sort
    > an introduction to the control, at first I was kind of stuck until I got familiarised with the keys
    > when you destroy the blocks with your weapon, they just disappear (maybe some sort of explosion affect?)
    > sound?

I know that more game devs, the better, but it won't be if they stay at the same skill.

I made everything you see in this game with Gamemaker and Gimp, except for the font.

Yes, the hero could definately use some more personality. You can hardly notice that he's walking! While I am a bit limited because I have to be able to show him walking and jumping while holding a gun in any direction, a better walk animation and an idle animation would be a good start. I agree the inventory menu could really use more work
    I liked exploring.
    Glad to hear it

I must admit that gun is very wimpy early on, but it can actually become quite powerful with upgrades. Have you gotten the level 2 power upgrade yet? I might have to decrease the amount of meteorites needed to get it. Fuel is very restrictive early on, I think I might either decrease the amount of fuel you lose passively or make the first fuel upgrade cheaper.

Yeah, I'm still trying to look for good music programs and sound files, I'm definitely not an expert in that category.

I made everything you see and hear except for the font.

I used GameMaker, Gimp, and SFXR 8-bit sound generator.

Hey! He's sensitive about his size! (Can't make him any larger than 1 block but I might remake the sprites someday)
    > limit to the jetpack or bubble jump thingy (x key feature)
I could but that would make it so the character could possibly get stuck. I want to avoid that.
    > (optional to the above opinion) you take fall damage of some sort
I don't really think it would add that much gameplay with the way the jetpack is now.
    > an introduction to the control, at first I was kind of stuck until I got familiarised with the keys
All the keys were explained in the tutorial? What did you get stuck with?
    > when you destroy the blocks with your weapon, they just disappear (maybe some sort of explosion affect?)
The dirt blocks leave rubble when you destroy them. I've been too lazy to do that for the other blocks though.
    > sound?
    Added! No music though yet.
I thought I should answer this one since your avatar and sig is so awesome. Sorry for the long wait.
