    Part 7

It was the early morning, still dark, with only a faint smudge of the sunrise peering over the horizon. Jennifer still perched on the room's round table, reluctant to leave. JVKlub was teeming with people, some of which were packing rucksacks with food and bottled water. These people, and pickle, lined up orderly against the wall in preparation for their leaving. the Engineer Ramm paced along the row, handing out a shriek rifle or some other cruel looking weapon from a sack as he went.

"Cal and Yak you both have standard issue rifles, twenty rounds each. That's all I could manufacture in time, let's just hope you actually think before you shoot." Cal and Yak took their respective rifles from Ramm and loaded in the first four bullets each.
"Anthony, I'm giving you this..." Rammjet heaved a rocket launcher from the sack. It was short for a launcher, no more than a full arm's length, but it was bulky and curvaceously shaped so that it would rest over the shoulders comfortably. Anthony also took three warheads from Ramm and cautiously placed them in his own rucksack.
"Poozy you already have your weapon, you should all be ready to go assuming you've all been to the toilet." Anthony half-smiled at this until Yak flung his bag to the ground and rushed off to a door in the far left corner. Joman got up from the round table and signed for attention.
"This is more for those of us who are left behind than those who are leaving." He announced, "This mission is in no way an end-game, OK? If suspicion rises, we cover for those who are gone. Try not to do anything in particular, try not to raise any alarms. This mission needs to go smoothly and secretly, so lets all play it low for a while." Prism and Ramm nodded their approval at this, Ymmot however turned from the table and quietly made his way to the entrance of the den. He would have left, if it were not for what happened next.

As Ymmot drew back the metal sheet that covered the stair well, the droid Python tumbled down. He soared past Ymmot and crashed down the stairs onto the floor of the den with a loud thump. He looked up dizzily, then stared about him terrified as shriek rifles were raised to point at his head. Yak walked back into the room busy with his belt, then let it go at the sight of the droid. His trousers slid to his ankles.
"What the flipping heck is a droid doing here?" Yelled Poozy, standing firmly in front of Python with a rifle aimed down his neck. Yak hurried to their sides and readied his own rifle. The droid raised his hands to head height and looked about at his captors.
"I'll tell you! I'll tell you!" He stammered in a robotic voice that almost had a hint of the fear which his body language clearly portrayed, "I found Jennifer's note in the Orchard so I followed her!" Jennifer blushed and his her head between her shoulders.
Ymmot bounded back down the stairs and in to the view of Python. "We should kill him!" He decided, "He must have come here to expose us, why else would he be eavesdropping outside? We can't risk him telling the others, we can't let him go back out there!" Ymmot grabbed the shriek rifle from Cal and aimed it down at Python's face, who in turn yelped and fell onto his palms. Cal snatched the rifle back before Ymmot had a chance to pull the trigger.
"Hold off there! These things are really loud, do you want to burst all of our ear drums?" He slung the rifle over his shoulder instead of pointing it back at Python, and pinned down Ymmot with a watchful glare. The droid shuffled uncomfortably.
"I wasn't going to tell the other droids, to tell the truth I wouldn't trust them. Ourr programming is starting to decay and they are acting irrationally."
"It's true." Said Prism, "Remember Squids? Droids are programmed to hold a council with Jiggmin before exacting 'permanent justice', but they just killed him there and then!"
"I want to help!" Python continued, "I heard all of your plans, and I agree with them! That's why I didn't report you immediately." Ymmot kicked at the dust and flounced to the other side of the room.
"I can't believe you're listening to this!" He remarked, "Since when has a droid ever helped us? You'd be foolish to let him go back!"
"And we won't" Replied Joman. He winked at Poozy, who bowed his head in response. "He'll go with the mission party."

The guns that were pointed at Python were raised and set aside, Yak offered a hand to help Python to his metal feet which was gratefully accepted. Ramm walked up to the droid, speaking aloud to Ymmot as he went.
"We've ignored Python because he's the night-watch, but in truth he has shown no signs against us. Maybe his programming broke... the good way." He reached into his sack and drew out another gun, shorter and more skeletal in structure. "You can borrow this, you'll have to get close to make the best of it though. It's actually rather clever, it works by compressing sand into glass beads and using those as the munitions. The heat of the last fired round is used to smelt the new one. This means each bullet is in fact a searing hot shard of glass, the stopping power may not be great but-"
"Okay Ramm that's enough." Prism interrupted. "He doesn't need to know how it works, just how to use it."
Python turned to Poozy, Anthony, Cal and yak, and beamed.

The quintet scampered silently around the surface of Jiggmin's Village, picking their way through the ruins of broken houses where there were least watchful eyes. The sky was now a shade of dulled blue, calm and peaceful before the tyranny of the sun awoke it. It was easy on the eyes and the party made it to the Welcoming gates without a hitch. Cal lightly pushed the gate and it drifted open with a creaky murmur. He winced at the noise, though it was very slight. They passed through one by one, having only opened the gate only just enough to squeeze by. Then they were out! The desert lay before them, stretching to what seemed like eternity into the distance. A dirty brown haze stained the horizon, Sparks was no more than a day's walk away. The cool air and serene atmosphere soothed Anthony, he knew too well that the filthy and foul smelling air of Sparks was only too close.

    Part 8

It was nearing the middle of the day in Jiggmin's Village. The shadows had grown short and fat, and the sky was bright like polished bronze and decorated with feathery clouds. Ymmot passed from the brightness and into the otherworldly darkness of the Dungeons.

"You will be required to double your duties." Ordered the droid Asilva. "Now you must come four times a day, no less."
"Why, a little short-handed around here?" Asked Ymmot impatiently. Asilva stood before him for a moment, and through all his confident aura Ymmot spied a sudden pang of insecurity.
"...Python has been assigned to more important duties." He eventually concluded, and patted Ymmot through the door of the dungeon before locking it once more and resting his back against it. Ymmot ignored the bucket and mop propped against the walls and headed straight for the interrogation booth. Elm was still inside sitting on his chair, though his head was lolled to one side and his eyes were shut. Ymmot coughed and Elm righted himself, blinking to clear his eyes from sleepy dust.
"Am I still here? At least let me out of this room and to the cells, I've already told you everything and I'm getting fed up of the same four walls every day." Elm slumped into his chair and puffed.
"You're not going to the cells Elm." Replied Ymmot, revealing a key from his overcoat. "This key is for the front door, I took it from Asilva ages back during the revolution but have always been persuaded never to use it. That time is gone now, if I don't use it I won't ever get a chance! So I'm giving it to you, I'll leave the interrogation room unlocked. Leave around mid day when Asilva leaves to check on Jiggmin, the welcoming gates were unlocked as of a few hours ago and I doubt anybody has noticed yet." He pushed the key into Elm's palm, who was himself returning to his usual vigor.
"Thank you! If you decide to follow me, I'll be waiting at the borders of the sea until tomorrow." Elm raised his voice as Ymmot strolled out of the room.
"What's that noise about?" Asked Asilva as he unlocked the grated door to the dungeons.
"Just the usual, claims he is innocent, you know." Ymmot shot Asilva a sly wink which went unnoticed and walked off into the street, hands in pocket.

    *****

Akan tip-tapped around the tiled floor of her palace, gnawing on a taco as she did so. The pink earphones were clipped around her head. Webbz stood at the entrance to the room, nervously balling her hands together.
"It should be any moment now!" Webbz said, "Black s-said lunch was always served mid day. I'm only telling you what he told me!" Akan shhed at Webbz and waved a finger at her.
"I can hear movement now, it must be lunch... this is so exciting! A plan coming together perfectly, as I knew it would of course, and the hour that will decide the rest of the world is looming over us! Doesn't it just make you so horny?!"
    Webbz spluttered, "I...I'm sorry?"
"SHHH!" Hissed Akan, "It's happening, it's happening right now!"

The droid Asilva paced the length of Jiggmin's room, shadowed by V who watched him eagerly. Prism backed her way through the front door, tray laden with food in hand. She layed it down on Jiggmin's bed, over his legs, and backed off to the corner of the room. V leant over the food and began to pack it into his mouth, grinding it down at ferocious speeds into it was nothing more than a pulp. He then bent over Jiggmin's mouth and began regurgitating the food into it. Prism wrinkled her nose and averted her eyes.
"I wish you wouldn't do that" She remarked, "One of these days he will choke too."
"Are you wishing injury on our mayor?!" Asilva barked back at Prism, "Because if you are.."
"I know I know, you have the right to exact justice on me, seriously stop suspecting me of everything!" She rolled her eyes, but at that moment the body of Jiggmin began to convulse, shaking uncontrollably. V grabbed Jiggmin around the chest in an attempt to hold him still, but despite this Jiggmin creased up and rolled onto his side.
"What's happening to him?" Shouted Asilva, striding across the room and straight up to Prism. He grabbed her by the neck, forcing her to cough.
"I don't know.." She croaked, "He was the same as he always has been this morning, it must be the food or something."
"The food?!" Yelled Asilva, "The food you prepared? V take her to the dungeons for questioning!" The droid V hesitated, unsure whether to leave the side of Jiggmin, but a stern look from Asilva persuaded him. He dropped Jiggmin and hauled Prism by the arm, leading her out of the room just as Jiggmin's fit of coughing began to subside.

"That's it.." Muttered Akan, "I've finally done it... he's actually dead..." She clapped her little legs together cheerfully and threw the headphones into the air. Webbz wretched and stumbled.
"It's finally time for me to make myself known.." Said Akan, "Time to move into a new home! Without their mayor they'll be begging for somebody to take control, and that somebody will be me!" As she spoke Webbz slumped to the floor and let out a little bile onto the clean tiles.
"Ugh!" Akan hopped back from Webbz in disgust, "It's only a killing, no need to get that upset over it, chance is you'll be doing it again so you better get used to the feeling." Webbz panted on the floor, gasping for air to reply.
"I'm sorry about your floor... I just feel a bit sick, I'm sorry!"
"No matter, you can clean it up later" Replied Akan, "Urgh.. that's put me right off my taco.." She threw her taco out over the balcony where the telescope rested.

    Part 9

The mission party trudged through the sand. Long ago they had each set their own pace and were now walking in single file, some left far behind and Python with his strong robotic body at the front. Anthony was panting for breath, already tired by the same journey the day before. Poozy held up a hand and hollered, and the party grouped up once more.

"As you might already have discovered we've run out of water." Poozy looked to Python, "but that's only because bringing any more would weigh us down. We've thought it through you see. Anthony has arranged for us to meet at Helion's house to refill. I think it's just over that rocky ledge." Poozy pointed to a band of beige stones that were semi-submerged in the shifting sands, and the group made their way over to it. No sooner had they reached its bank could they see the dusty cottage only fifty or so yards away. It has been built beside an oasis which splashed the otherwise bleak setting with a welcome green colour. Helion stood at the open door, waving, and they hurried down the other side of the bank to greet him.
"You're early!" He remarked, "No matter, Husk has all our things ready." At that Husk appeared at the door carrying a crate filled with packaged food. "You can fill your water bottles up in the oasis too" He finished, before grabbing a gun inside his porch and following them out. Anthony turned to him in surprise.
"What's the gun for?" He asked.
"I'm coming too, of course!" Helion beamed back at Anthony.
"No... you're not... you're just helping us with the water."
"That sounds rather dull, I think I'll come along anyway." Helion turned and waved back to Husk, who in turn smiled and waved.
"He's got a gun." Said Cal, "and it's never wise to turn down a little extra help, look he's even bought enough food for himself too! Can't we let him come?"
"Of course you can!" Said Helion, "and I'm not giving you a choice, I'm coming." With that he hoisted a rucksack onto his back and happily stomped off to join Python and Yak who were already filling their water bottles.

The next half of the journey went rather more pleasantly with the fresh oasis water swilling around inside of them. Helion kept the party entertained with stories of beyond the village and trivia about the evils of Sparks. It lifted the party's moods and helped keep their minds on track. It was, then, too soon when they finally caught the first full view of Sparks. For all its spires and shining lights and scale it still resembled an ugly toilet stain. There was no way a party of six could creep so silently as Anthony had done prior, this time their entrance was going to be loud. Very loud. Luckily for them the sun had now drifted low in the sky as night approached and wase shrouded in the smog that sat atop Sparks. The guards at an outpost that led to the city's entrance didn't see the party as they crept between the hedges and dry grasses until they were within calling distance. Poozy turned from side to side to organize the group.
"Anthony, there's a sharp-shooter nest in a watch tower right in front of us. I want you to target that with your shriek launcher. Yak, Cal, on his mark. Suppress the other guards. It should give Python the chance to get in close and open the gates for us. We'll regroup once inside." Poozy hissed as loudly as he could to make sure the instructions were heard, because the group has now become quite spread out.
The others grimly nodded and charged their respective weapons. Anthony loaded a warhead into the back of his launcher and then fitted it snugly against his shoulder, then with one swift and confident movement he stood and turned all at once to point at the watch tower. There was a click, and then an almighty swoosh as the warhead shot out of the launcher and flew uncannily towards the target. A spout of hot smoke full of glowing embers shot out the back end of the launcher and swallowed the bodies of Yak and Cal as they dived forwards to take aim. Python leant with his hands on the ground, legs primed to spring as soon as... CRASH, the air shuddered and the dark gloomy ground was for a fleeting moment cast in a bright golden light from an incredible explosion. Python bolted, running straight towards the distant gate. The guards who dwelled there ran about in confusion, shouting and ordering and screaming as the watch tower tumbled in an inferno of flames. One of them pointed to Python and yelled, and guns were pointed towards him. CRACK, Yak's rifle was the first to fire. The recoil pushed back sharply into his shoulder, and in the other direction a plume of white hot gas erupted. One of the guards was picked up and tossed aside like a doll, blood spraying into the air. Yak reached for the bolt and loaded the next round into the chamber, then again, CRACK. This time the round struck a brick wall beside the guards, which fiercely burst and sprayed them with fragments of stone. Now Cal fired, a slower but steadier aimed shot. It landed on a new guard who had just appeared and was loading a sniper rifle, and then suddenly he wasn't there. A body void of head nor shoulders dropped onto the ground, smoking hotly.

Python was now almost upon the guards. They had gathered their senses and were firing back at the onslaught when the muzzle flashes were seen reflecting off Python's shiny metal plating. In surprise a couple turned to him and he was forced to leap onto the ground, only just in time as the space above his head was filled with flying metal.
"He's pinned down there!" Yelled Poozy, although Yak and Cal were now rolling behind the shrubs once again to avoid the oncoming fire. Helion looked at Poozy white faced.
    "Do you think I should..?"
"Yes! Now!!" With the reply both Poozy and Helion leaped out of cover and aimed their weapons. Helion began firing his own weapon, but the sound was drowned as Poozy let loose a silver flash from his own shriek rifle. The round roared as it passed through the air and fell between the two guards next to Python. The blast kicked a thick cloud of dust into the air and knocked the guards onto their backs, who were then killed where they lay as Python jumped from the ground and sprayed their bodies with glass. Only a few more guards remained, and they ran into the depths of the city, chased away by the impacts of Yak and Cal's well aimed shots.

Python cautiously sneaked around the enclosure, peering into many dark spaces before opening the gates.
"Ramm says the security headquarters are only a few blocks down from the main gate." Shouted Poozy so even Anthony (relatively far away) could hear clearly, "Those guards will get there before we get to the gate, so drop your rucksacks and anything heavy enough to weigh you down and RUN FOR THAT GATE!"

    *****

Elm walked casually through the village center, not reckless enough to run unless any well-deserved attention was given. He decided this was a bad decision despite it's technical merit, because nobody else was acting casual at all. People ran by him, nearly knocking him down, some of which shouting to get off the path or to follow. He caught one by the shoulder as they passed him so that he could ask what was going on.
"Excuse me good sir, could you kindly inform me why... Midir?!" Clips stood shocked in front of Elm.
"Elm? I thought you were locked up!"
"You knew I was in that ghastly prison and you didn't even remotely think of coming to help? I came to rescue you!"
"Rescue me?" Clips shrugged, "I don't need rescuing Elm, now get out of here before you're caught."
"What is going on, anyway?" Asked Elm.
"Prism has been thrown in Jail for poisoning Jiggmin's food, Ymmot's leading a protest against the droids in the Library. Everybody's going there, it's going to all end horribly of course."
"Poisoning food?" Elm replied, "Jiggmin's dead?!"
"Well that's exactly why Ymmot is protesting." Said Clips, "He's not dead, he's awake!"

    Part 10

A cold wind blew through the empty streets of Jiggmin's Village. It was nearing morning once more, yet the town's lights remained off. The only sound to be heard was the tuneless whistling of the wind, and the muffled, echoed voices that came from the Library of the Ancients. The droid V paced the streets, silently patrolling what was now a ghost town.

"I'll tell you how I know we can no longer trust them!" Bellowed Ymmot to the bustling crowd below the overturned bookcase he stood on. "They've broken their programming, no matter how much you trusted Jiggmin's rules... it doesn't matter because they aren't following them any more!"
He was interpreted by a lone voice, "How do you know this?"
"I know" Said Ymmot, "Because one of them told me himself! Haven't seen Python around last night? That's because he's out running errands for the Pickle, tell them Jo!" Joman shook his head and hid himself within the crowd, "Think about it!" Continued Ymmot, ignoring Joman, "It was only this week that Asilva killed Squids! You all saw that and you know I am telling the truth, but now listen to something you haven't seen!"
The crowd was in awe of Ymmot, hanging from his every word and slowly becoming more enraged. "As you all know I am the dungeon keeper, not a job I applied for but one that was given to me by the droids as a 'duty'. It isn't a dungeon, because there isn't anybody alive inside! The droids spare only a single crust of bread and bowl of water every week, and often I walk in to find one of the prisoners has been murdered!" The crowd was whipped up into a violent rage at this news, so much so that they began to stamp their feet in unison and cheer: Death to droids, death to droids, death to droids!
Joman reemerged from the crowd and spoke up, "And how will we get rid of them? They're as strong as ten men each, and they're not afraid to use that strength especially with their broken programming. Jiggmin designed them with riot control in mind. Do you really think a fight is going to end in our favour?"
Ymmot spoke to the crowd rather than to Joman, "Python is away, far away in Sparks, and V is a cripple, weaker than a single man. There will be no fight, there will be an execution!" The crowd roared and waved their hands in the air. As ymmot dropped down from the bookcase he was caught by a very worried Joman.
"Ymmot you couldn't have picked a worse time, our three best fighters and our guns are in Sparks and Jiggmin has finally returned from his coma. Don't you think we should wait, just until Jiggmin regains his senses and fixes the droids?"
Ymmot whispered, "Not ALL our guns, and we both know the droids are outside Jiggmin's control now. He hasn't been maintaining them for years Jo! No wonder they're completely nuts."
"Well what exactly to you plan to do?" Asked Joman.
"First thing's first, I'm freeing Prism, then I'm going to kill Asilva." Ymmot stepped towards Joman and opened his overcoat to show him the the pistol that was strapped to the inside. It was of Pickle make. Smooth, black, gilled like a shark and long in the barrel. Joman recognised it from Ramm's armoury and knew the damage it could inflict, the recoil alone could snap your wrist if you weren't prepared for it.
"You're really serious about this, aren't you?" Said Joman.
"I've always been serious!" Shouted Ymmot, "All this time you've hated Sparks and blamed it for JV's demise, well I blamed the droids. We want the same thing Jo! We're just going about it different ways." Ymmot turned and left the Library. Joman didn't try to stop him.

    *****

The morning had yet to reach Sparks, its tall buildings and dense air stole the light, so for all intents and purposes it was still night. Poozy, Python, Cal, Yak, Anthony and Helion wound their way through the outskirts of warehouses and skyscrapers in single file, backs to the walls. Anthony led the party as he knew the way, and Python backed him up just in case they ran into a guard. Progress was quick and they stayed out of sight despite the squadrons of guards that hurried back and forth, and the wailing sirens in the distance. It was still dark when they finally reached the cities main building, the magnificent, cathedral-like structure where the mayor lived. It may have been a grand building but it wasn't homely. They circled the back until they came across the engineering dock where Anthony had first escaped. It was now their safest way in.

"I wonder what they will call us" Muttered Helion, "We'll be infamous."
"If this goes to plan we'll be straight-up famous." Said Poozy.
They climbed into the belly of the building where yak retrieved the Orange mapping device from his pockets.
"Round this room and to the left, then the lift on our fourth right leads to the second-to-top floor." He said. "Looks like the only way up to the top is a stairwell, probably be guarded." The others nodded and made for the elevator. To their relief it opened, the guards hadn't put the building under lock-down. They packed themselves into the small room and the doors shut, then they began to climb.
"Ammo check." Said Yak, and they all reloaded their guns. They had barely used any of the ammo rammjet had gave them, and Helion noticed.
"Hey, we've done pretty well for ourselves. Five guards dead and not a scratch on ourselves, and still enough ammo to do it all again four times more. We're like the dream-team!"
"Put it down to good fortune." Said Cal, "Sparks has never been attacked before, there aren't even any armies on the continent. Guards are for security, not for fighting battles. We've probably fired our guns more than they have."
"Still... I'd say we did pretty good." Answered Helion.
"That was when we had surprise on our side, when we reach the top you better keep your head down a little more."
At that moment the elevator jolted and stopped, then the doors slid apart.

The party ran down the dark hallway, it was carpeted unlike the rest of the building. The thick carpet ran across the floor and up the walls where it met the lavishly tiled ceiling. They couldn't deny that they were in thanks of the soft ground after having walked on stones and sand for so long. The sounds of the outside world were faint and ghostly this high off the ground, and as they finally reached the end of the hallway they saw just how high that really was. Next to the last stairwell was a tea room with a wide window, a window that curved around the entire length of the room and was ribbed with wrought iron. They took the chance to look down, though little was clear, they were actually above the roof of the smog and it blocked their view down. On the horizon they could just make out the sea. It glowed white in the morning sun. Python squinted and zoomed his telescopic vision, he was sure he could see something else. Just over the sea, the shimmering and sky-faded outline of distant mountains, the continent beyond the sea. They reluctantly broke away from the window and turned into the stairwell, priming their weapons and flexing their shoulders.
    "On my mark."

I'll probably make two more parts, and maybe an epilogue after that, then the story will be finished.
