BONK Like a gentleman!
Nobody is going to regard this post because it goes way out of their dim zone of familiarity, but I grew up on Russian, and for a big part, also Soviet culture. I remember almost none of the Western cartoons marketed at little kids from my childhood; rather, I remember watching legendary East Bloc stuff like Nu Pogodi, the socialist version of Tom and Jerry, and various interpretations of traditional Russian folktales. And unlike the West, I distinctly remember puppetry being used readily too.
I think the reason why I remember Soviet animations so much better is because it was more in-depth and warm - and also because very little came out of the state-controlled filmmakers compared to the free USA. Since the downfall of the communist East, the essence of Russian childhood filmmaking has been replaced by a more western and capitalist. Perhaps by terms of society, it is for the better - but I find it a shame that such a remarkable culture of companionship has been lost to time.
