Thread: Save a Life

  1. #1

    Default Save a Life

If you were given the option to save 1 random human life from death at the cost of 1 dollar, would you do it?
What if you were given the option to save 10 random human lives for 10 dollars?
    100 lives for 100 dollars?
    1,000?
    How far?
("All my money" is a legit answer here.)
(If you don't use dollars, modify the question for your currency. If you think it should be changed to 10 of them or whatever, fine.)

How would your answer change if was 10x as much per life? Or if it were only 10% as much?

    Notes:
    1) There would be no chance of you saving someone you know. (To prevent people saying they'd spend a lot just for the small chance of saving a dying friend/relative. This question isn't meant to have personal feelings associated with it.)
    2) You would never meet the people you save, or at least wouldn't know it.
    3) Nobody else would know about your decision or the fact you had the choice. (This obviously isn't a possible real life situation, but ignore that.) [This is to keep you from fearing you will lose all your friends or whatever - only problem is, you're saying it here! Just try not to let those feelings change your answer.]

I haven't come to a decision about what I would do yet...

Please post your reasons for your answer.

We could all do this by buying mosquito nets, yet most of us don't to any substaintial degree. So apathy wins.

I wouldn't do it, karma has a way of screwing you over, I'd be worried that I was saving LRA leaders or terrorists or something.

Plus if anybody offered to do this in real life, the overwhelming likelihood is that you're being robbed. x3

But, if it's 1 life for 1 dollar, regardless of the worth of a dollar, why don't we persuade the US mint to print 7bn dollars and continue to circle them automatically? Nobody would EVER DIE.

    Raar!

I'd probably devote myself to getting money in order to save lives.

I'd begin by anonymously robbing facilities such as small shops. Then, after a few days, I'd go undercover for a while. When I come back to the surface, I'll begin a political career. I'd be able to charm and manipulate myself out of people, all due to my egoistic mindset and "carpe diem" ideology of the fact that I'm capable of saving countless lives. Once I reach the top position of the country, I'll cut back on everything medical, all of a sudden, and send a suspiciously accurate sum of 7 billion dollars to this "save-a-life" fund. I will be a martyr. I will be the savior of humanity.

Nobody is going to die on my watch.

Network rules however might dictate that, because you can't save anybody you know, some people are inevitably going to die.

How about if we add the condition that only good people can be saved?

    You guys are GENIUS!

...except for the fact that one of the conditions is that nobody else will be able to know about it.

Since there's no chance of saving someone you know, I guess the reverse holds true as well.

    I would save -1 000 000 000 lives, I'll be rich and I'll have created a more sustainable world.

If that were to happen, they're would be overpopulation issues to deal with. While you may be the great savior of humanity, you would be partially responsible for the downfall as well. We should also consider this: If I were to pay my $1 to save a life, let's say it's a 90 year old on the verge of death, and I save that person. Do you think I'm being selfish to let that person live on through their life of misery and pain of being at that age?
Something the OP needs to specify however, does 'saving' mean this said person is saved forever, aka, immortality?
Finally, I think you should not limit it to 'good people', it's really a perspective. Cliché I know, but still.

    bleh.... 2?
We were given 2 hands to hold. 2 legs to walk. 2 eyes to see.
Two ears to listen. But why only 1 heart?
Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find

You bring up some good points, all of which I have thought of...
As for saving people so they can suffer some more, do you think those people would want to die?
"Saving" does not mean they are immortal, but that the threat of death leaves. (If they have a deadly disease, for example, the disease and all symptoms are cured.) They will still be able to die later on.
The "good people" part was really meant as an optional thing, which is why I didn't include it in the OP. I let other people set up any extra conditions they want.

EDIT: I also noticed that not one person said how their choice would be affected if the price changed...I guess nobody has a definite answer that includes spending a definite amount of their own money.
