I think beating kids is one of the archaic behaviours which still holds strong in your culture, such as believing nonsense about forcing sinistrous people to become dextrous can be justified just because christianity is a tenacious religion, or a tradition of familiarising children with firearms nearly from birth. Even comparable to unnecessary circumcision- 50% of American males are circumcised for unnecessary archaic religious reasons, and yet so many of them defend their parents' choice to mutalate them, as has become evident by example on this website.
What would you percieve, looking at a group of southern pacific islanders, who remove their sons' front teeth with a sharp stone? What would you percieve, looking at a Catholic choir boy being castrated to cure suspected homosexuality?
What would you percieve, looking at a Christian man beat his slaves?
[all of which were formerly not uncommon archaic practices]
Are these behaviours rationalised just by the fact other people also practice them? No, that's arbitrary reasoning- and it's the reason you dismiss statistical evidence [or proof, as this western society has come to know it after centuries of struggle], in favour of anecdotes and archaism.
Just because something is the done thing doesn't make it the right thing, just because an idea is tenacious doesn't make it worthy.
The bible also claims that the entirity of humanity was doomed by a talking snake which convinced a woman, made from a rib, to eat a magical fruit.
You can't take it seriously, especially when it encourages hateful treatment of other people- that's sick.
'According to the london daily mail'
Oh dear...you don't know that the daily mail is the least reliable of a generally unreliable group of british news papers.
If you want to see how unreliable they are, here is a song of everything the daily mail thinks causes cancer:
And as we're all very aware most people read whatever they like from their holy books- essentially an attempt to rationalise their behaviours as apriori, rather than actually using their brains to question things and work out solutions.
You can read any book metaphorically and decipher whatever meaning you like- as we've seen several times in DGE and unfortunately now in this thread.
Unfortunately the literal translation is more hateful than any single person could manage by trying to justify their own petty habits and rituals...

Raar!
I was never physically punished, I was only ever talked to, and had something taken away.
And to be frank, it worked like a charm, whenever I did something bad my father would just sit down and talk to me, tell me what I did wrong and then tell me that he'd give me my Gameboy back at the end of the week.
Or something along those lines.
And that worked, ever since I was little, don't see why people can't just do it that way, talk to your child instead of mindlessly abusing them, otherwise, they'll never figure out whats wrong and whats right.
And as for the, "you're grounded from X for X days" punishment, that really works.. I mean, boredom is a killer especially if you're a 90's kid, so that sort of punishment was both effective and non-abusive.
More people should just do that.. I mean, s'not like I turned out 'spoiled' or 'stupid' and whatever else it is people are claiming.
Funny how questions of conservatism...and especially violence actually...seem to split so regularly across religious lines.
Isn't it?
If you guys want us to think you're justified in abusing children then quoting from vapid holy books isn't sufficient, because we see little wisdom in bronze age texts...might as well live your life according to Beow'u'lf...now I'm off to attack the Geats!

Some people use books to justify what they already believe- In my experience these people are very conservative.
Some people believe whatever they read in books- In my experience these people are mad.
Some people believe what they can establish through reason- In my expereince these people are right.
Raar!
Luckily, my parents havent hit me, because i havent really done anything that bad... xD

I wouldn't know what getting beaten for a punishment feels like
...But I do know how it feels to get beaten, you feel small and weak, it's the worst feeling in the world, your emotionally and physically scared for life, I'd rather disappear.

To the perfect existence
I'm shivering with cold
I struggle against despair
I still don't see how that's implying death....They are sending tribute (which is a good thing, right?) by him, to Eglon. I really don't see how that can translate to "They killed him."
Yes, the bible clearly implies special significance to the right hand. Setting your right hand on something, or being at someone's right hand, means that you have their good will, or are special to them, or something similar. It in no way means that writing with your left-hand is a bad thing.
As for being sworn in with the right hand, it's the same thing. The right hand has special meaning. That's all there is to it.
