    Default Child Discipline

What are your thoughts on this controversial topic? Are you for or against the old form of child discipline (belting, slapping, things like that)? Are you against any physical discipline for children? Discuss your opinions here.

And no, this is a thread about child discipline, not abuse.

When I was a little kid and did something wrong, I would get beaten. Go figure that after that I wouldn't do it. My parents could tell me not to do something 100 times before I got it, or just beat me once.

It is much more effective IMO than "don't do that." Of course this depends on the severity of the "crime." If it's something like drawing on the wall in crayon that would be different than calling someone a swear word.

Well, my dad grew up in the south, and he said that when he was beaten as punishment, he sure knew to never do that shit again. When he was told that what he was doing was wrong, it didn't really help quite as much.

    EDIT: yeah what asilva said

A smack on the hand now and then is okay, but children don't need to be spanked. Imo it's done a lot more out of anger than tough love, and parents use it as an emotional release and a way to instill fear. Excessive spanking can only lead to aggression, emotional instability and hostility toward the parent; research shows that kids who are spanked or hit with an object have lower IQs and are also more aggressive (particularly boys) and get in more trouble than kids who are not spanked.
    Well, shall we dance?

And yet my parents and I still turned out okay.

Yes, one example compared to many others that DIDN'T turn out okay.

I am strongly opposed to using physical punishment on a child, unless it is absolutely necessary to keep them from doing something awful.
    The switch is now OFF.

It is more effective on the parent's side of view, but you can't really tell what a 6 year old thinks and feels about his parents beating him up
Childs do learn and tough up, but it could lead to some serious (Not physical) problems

I don't think it's good to hurt children like that but sometimes you need to get it through their heads. I think a more verbal and timeout punishment is better for the child. so um, yeah

    Didn't turn out okay?

My mom also used to make me believe nonsense in order to prevent me from doing it again.
For example: Drinking too much coke will cause a black hole to form in your stomach

However, I refuse to beat my kids. o_o Maybe a little spank

Beating simply teaches you to blindly follow your parents or risk getting hurt.

When I was younger, I did get beaten. Not severely. It was with a belt, but it left marks.

I am more so towards physical punishment. It's more effective and efficient.

For some it even causes the child to go against the parent and hate them

Corporal punishment is used widely in my parent's native culture, and for me, it proved to be very effective. If my parents told me to go sit in a corner and have a time out, I would've probably laughed and disregarded it.

However, if I were a parent, I most likely wouldn't use corporal punishment against my children. I would probably take up authoritative parenting rather than authoritarian.

Depends on the child, I think.

Let's just say my parents made sure I didn't become a brat at an early age. I can respect that.

Being beaten with a belt is pretty severe, man.

What really sucks is that people who are beaten think that it's the norm to be beaten.
