It's a bit overwhelming at first, only thing I can say is you just have to join to experience it.

Not watching Death Note won't really make a difference and after a game you should get used to everything.

Not hard at all. There's classes, good guys, bad guys, and explosions. Everyone does something special besides detectives, killing Kira (Which is what you want to do, unless you're Kira) is made via posting on this thread that you want to execute player X, everything else should be easy enough to understand after reading the OP.
