Thread: Are atheists less moral than theists?

  1. #21
This reminds me of the princess alice experiment.

In the experiment children are encouraged to play a game without cheating.
A test group is told that 'princess alice', an invisible princess, is watching them and will punish them if they cheat.

A control group is not told about princess alice.

The rate of cheating was higher amongst the control group, although this situation is not entirely approxible to real life situations, but it serves to show why a lot of parents encourage their children to believe in santa claus I suppose.

    Raar!

I don't think atheists are less, or more, moral than theists. That question looks absurd to me.
My point is, for a theist, there's a main source of morality, which is their religion. But just like there's many sources of morality because there are many religions, there are also multiple sources of morality that don't come from religion.
Religions encourage morals, but in all honesty, there's lots of thing that do the same. Even if you're not religious, you'll be taught some form of moral code. Everybody who's not mentally ill can tell right and wrong apart; and religion is not the only thing that compels people to do the right thing.
People often do the right thing because it's right, religious or not. It makes simply no sense to me to think religious people are more moral, even being religious myself.

I would much rather go to a church for help than a bar, if that means anything.

When I used to go to church (cuz rammjet used to be religious, not me) the advice they gave to people was usually to pray or read the bible. Really helpful.

That doesn't mean anything; bars aren't temples to atheism...

I'd rather go to a Gurdwara than a tandoori, if that means anything. [because they sometimes serve curry at the Gurdwara anyway, so it's best of both worlds]

Interesting, but how exactly does that relate to this thread?
So mark me condemned, and mark me as vacant

Also, morality is all relative anyway, so you can't really compare it like that.

    EDIT: oops double post.

Princess alice is an imaginary omni-present authority figure, which are generally the qualities of the gods most people worship.
