Default Are atheists less moral than theists?

Personally I think this is ridiculous, I even wrote a speech countering this idea and presented it to my school.
What do you think? If so, please say why.
No matter what I just said, It was shit and it was real.

I may just be saying this because I myself am an atheist but I don't believe atheists are less moral at all. In some cases I actually believe atheists are more moral because they don't do things like donating to charity because they believe it will grant them the acceptance of a God, but rather because they seriously care about what's happening around them.
That's not to say Christians only do good for the sake of being accepted by God into heaven and all that stuff, but some Christians are like that, just like some Atheists believe that they don't have to do anything for anybody because they don't have a God in their life to punish them for doing wrong.
    The switch is now OFF.

In some aspects, I see it as, theists HAVE to have a belief to be a good person, however, I'm good-hearted without one (according to other people).

I think the stereotyped atheist being asked about is the one who worships Satan and hates humanity with a passion.

im highly immoral.. but for a good reason.. because im logical. in other words theres alot of things that you've been brought up to think, like certain words are bad, or that a wizard in the sky created everything, or gay marriage is wrong.. i address all these things from a logical standpoint and deduce my own set of "morals".

I think that atheism is for people that are able to do good without requiring some sort of reward (like heaven, 70 virgins, ect...).

Theists, however, seem to need some sort of payoff, and some sort of guidelines to help them achieve that reward.

This leads me to say that atheists have better morals, because they are able to do good, just because they know it's right. Not because 'god' told them that they'd win a prize if they were nice

The Bible actually provides the way to lead a moral life, it also encourages to do good things from your heart and not for rewards or blessings, as none will be rewarded if you do so from the intent to receive such blessings. But it is true that the individual is responsible for committing good or evil acts, and obviously even Christians have the tendencies to fall behind these morals and pursue they're own perception of right or wrong. However since most atheists may not read the Bible, it doesn't mean they are all cruel-hearted people. I have even notice some are more amicable and benign than most Christians I have seen. So being religious doesn't guarantee that you are the nicest person in the world regardless of anything bad you do. Neither does being an atheist mean that you are a terrible person to yourself and others. It is the individual's disposition.

I don't believe that athiests are any less moral than theists.

I am, however, a little disappointed at the amount of people that believe theists follow God and do charity only out of fear of hell and the reward of heaven.

There is no relationship between one's religious views and their morality. Morality is something that is unique to each person; no religion changes that. There are many religious people that are much more moral than many atheists; the opposite is true as well.

I wonder why people are 'scared' into doing the 'right' thing.
In my opinion, one should not be afraid of going to hell to have to do something nice/generous(whatever adjective you prefer) for another, you should do it because you want to help. :p
I agree with you Bean Boy.

Morals shouldn't be a question of belief, IMO.

  19. #12
Heh, no. The state of the catholic church is enough to disprove this.

I sometimes think that people who follow a strong set of teachings are less moral because they just follow the teachings without actually considering the moral implications, but that is only true for religious extremists who are actually really rare.

It depends on which religion you're comparing.

Also, just so you know, this thread has no answer. Athiests will be saying they're more moral, while theists will be saying they are.

And sometimes refuse to change when provided with the moral implications.

Most 'official' attempts to investigate this turn up 'no discernable difference,', indeed the subjectivity of morality is enough to render the question itself almost moot.

    Raar!

  25. #16
no difference, and if there was, it wouldnt be a major one

  26. #17
    no they arn't

  27. #18
I think that when atheists do good they do it because they really want to help.

Most theists do it because they think they have to or else they'll get punished. (from my experience, k)

Although some people are just really awesome so it doesn't really matter.

Morals are different for everyone, regardless if they're religious or not. Its the people who are religious to the extreme who seem to give other theists a bad name.(or something like that, you get what I mean) In my experience its the atheists who have bad morals, (real life) and religious people are genuinely good people. (Family friends)

After reading a few posts on how religious people only 'be nice' for a 'reward' it kinda makes me wonder and think "There really are people like that out in the world' So I guess I'm sorta in between.

There's a video called 'Most Hated Family in America.' It's about a religious organization that would beat any extremist religious group.
