Thread: Concerns about COPPA, Petition.

  1. #1

    Default Concerns about COPPA, Petition.

Since a lot of people are voicing concerns about the sanction banning all users under 13, I decided to stream line the process by producing a petition poll, for those who disagree to officially show their disagreement, which should save lots of threads and blog posts.

Enforcing COPPA [and arguably going beyond it, since COPPA allows parental permission], was not something our community supported, with a roughly 50-50 vote that showed no tendency towards enforcement above the background noise level of your average JV poll- and the poll itself was locked, so it's important that users who disagree get a proper opportunity to announce it.

[not sure if I made the poll public] EDIT: In the interest of representing the userbase's views, I'm not sure whether staff votes should be discounted from the poll- although since the poll is not public there is no way to do this.

I asked a moderator and they said it was cool, so it's fine.

The only ban I don't agree with is webbi2012's ban. Seriously in less than a month she will be 13 and she is mature enough.

If she turned 13 tomorrow and we knew she was underage today and she was on here without documented parental consent, Jiggmin could be in legal trouble.

Do you have a birth certificate proving they're under 13? No.

Do these widely ignored and impractical laws actually get enforced? No.

    He will soon.
You guys are welcome to discuss it all you like, but it will not and cannot change the facts.
COPPA says anyone under the age of 13 will be banned, that's just the way it is!

Parental permission, as Chimpy stated, can help fix our present situation.
The law itself does not simply have 1 line of text.

Please show me where it sais that anybody under 13 will be banned. No?

COPPA sais that anybody under 13 will require to have a message from the parents to register on the website. No matter what you will let 95% of all underaged people through and end up banning the mature people that admit they are underaged.

@bold; Maybe Jiggmin and the admins already discussed about it.

IDG News Service - Sony BMG Music Entertainment will pay $1 million to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for collecting data on at least 30,000 children under the age of 13 without their parents' consent, which violates the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Yeah they do get enforced... dunno what ever gave you the idea that they're not. It's not just big companies either.

As long as there is some sort of permission from parents, even if it's false it satisfies coppa laws though.

I think we are tackling this the wrong way. I mean petitions and polls. It seems too civilized to me. I say we start a revolt and cause a huge scene because to be honest I'm bored and am in no way earnest about by my ideals I just want to stir some action in JV and get everyone riled up for nothing. Is that ok?

''collecting data'' is different from registering on a website

Is jiggmin.com a significant company- comparable to sony- which is collecting data for sharpened marketing campaigns?

    Nope, that's a hyperbole.

Apart from instances of parental permission, but as is established JV isn't a large company and COPPA's highly fallacious for this site to execute. How exactly do you plan on ratifying people's ages- someone saying 'lol I'm 12' isn't conclusive proof they're under 13, and many people give bogus birth dates of the age 1 or 100 etcetera.

It's pedantry to a ridiculous extent.

But in a way it's acknowledging that the user is underaged and taking no action.
