Thread: Laser Pointers

    Default Laser Pointers

So I saw this guy with a laser pointer, and I asked to see it. Now I want one.

It was a 1w laser pointer, we started a fire with it by burning a blade of grass(it was pretty cool) He said he had some other one that was 100w and that it could go through a 3 inch stick/block of wood in like 5 seconds. I was literally
But apparently you need a lllliiiicccceeennnnsssseee to have anything .5w and up, so this summer I'm gonna get registered, and go buy a real laser pointer. Not those store ones. (those are so weak! they're only .0005w worth of power! )

Do any of you guys have pointers and what do you use them for if so.

Nah, waist of money for something you can get at Wal*mart for a dollar. Only real fun use for them anyway is freaking out dogs.

I say dogs because when I put it in front of my cat, she glanced at it and then continued her passive trait of not caring.

Whoa. That's really cool, I didn't know that laser pointers were made that could actually burn through things and start fires.

I'm going to have to get me one of those. But buying one of those 100 w ones would be a bit disastrous, don't you think?

As some people here know, I have lots of them, and I happen to know a heck of a lot about lasers in general, its a bit of a hobby. First, anything above maybe 20mW isn't really a laser "pointer" as it is just a toy (albeit a very, very dangerous one). Above maybe 100mW, to even look at the dot on something, you will need to wear laser safety glasses.

If you, for some reason, decide to go through with this, I have one recommendation. DO NOT BUY FROM WICKED LASERS. They are known for high prices, shoddy quality, poor safety and taking forever to get products out.

EDIT: Just for fun, here's one of the ones I own:

My cat likes to chase laser pointers. I find it's very useful for a lazy option when my cat is being pesty.

I bought a laser pointer abroad a few years ago.
Wasn't strong at all but you were able to.. Widen the focus? ..Something like that, and make the dot appear bigger, and you could replace the images with different caps.
Was very fun to make a moderately sized smiley face and just shine it on someones head from the balcony of the hotel and watch the hilarity ensue.

But aside from that, real laser pointers are not worth your investment, unless you're a budding pyromaniac, they can cause serious damage, just stick to the store-bought ones.
Pretty sure there is a video of someone burning through a small row of balloons using only a modestly powerful laser, so I'm sure a proper one can be very dangerous.
