For both multipication and addition, the order doesn't matter due to the properties of multipication and addition.

Ex. 3*4=12 4*3=12

And people getting it wrong is not an example of stupidity, and in the same way people getting it right is not an example of intelligence. It all comes down to both awareness of rules AND remembering they need to be applied (As no math above fifth grade levels uses "x" to signify multiplication, unless cross multiplying matrices), as well as being observant.
