Thread: K Factor

    Default K Factor

I have recently started folding again and I was looking at how k factor works, as I understand it, you get bonus points for completing a WU in less time than the deadline.

The exact formula for k factor I found was something like "sqrt((deadline/time you took)*k factor) * base points" and I also found a calculator that backed this up: http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php

I got project 7708, which has a base points of 1022, and it was taking me 36 minutes per frame, so after I did the calculations I figured out that I would get 2816 points out of it due to the k factor, (data from http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummaryC.html) however once the WU submitted I got the base 1022 points. I also have completed some smaller WUs worth 89 points as a base factor each with a k factor of three, I think their deadline is 6 days and I have been completing them in a couple hours each, yet I get no bonus.

Can someone explain to me what is happening?

You enter a passkey (which you receive from Stanford), you wait 10 WUs, and depending how many a3 Core WUs you have folded successfully (at least 80%!) you will start to receive bonus points. You will now receive the a4 core, and as long as you sustain an 80% average completion score, you will continue folding bonus WUs which give you bonus points.

Oh, and if you see project 6904, and you are running it at 30 mins/frame, you'll get a 264,164 PPD avg.

oh, so the k factor thing is only for people who have received a passkey from stanford, is it the bigadv thing I have read about?

Yes. Set it to 'advmethods' (without single quotes, of course) and a passkey. Oh, and try not to break a budget (or three) buying a quad-core. Dual-cores work as well.

How do you get a passkey? Is there a certain CPU requirement?

You get a passkey from here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

As long as you are folding SMP, the passkey will help.

For once, I don't know. All I know are
    -Passkey
    -Quad-Cores
    and
    -Stats

Just enter in your name, team number, and passkey.
Fold at least 8 out 10 WUs successfully.
Your bonus points will come at the 11th WU.

Ah, so I don't need to have SMP, I just need to fold successful WUs, alright then

  19. #17
    Sorry, you do need SMP.

    I meant 10 SMP WUs
