Thread: New folding@home reward for 500k points?

Default New folding@home reward for 500k points?

I've brought this up before, but I thought that it could use reviving. Many people stop folding because they hit 100k and stop. A good way to combat this would be to make a reward for 500k points, such as an armor body piece that acts like a crown does, so you could use it with the cowboy.

    Any other suggestions/thoughts/ideas?

    Haha yes first post.

I think that would be a good idea Nick. An armour body would be a cool piece to have.

Nah, that would make rewards WAY too exclusive. I think that cowboy is enough. Lets have a freerice reward instead.

Well, with the way computers are progressing, a computer that gets 50k ppd will cost less than $1000 soon, which would get that reward in barely less than a week. And a computer that even gets a tenth of that will still get it in barely more than three months.

Which is why freerice rewards would be a better alternative. It feeds people in Africa, and it doesn't matter if you have a fast or expensive computer. It just takes loads of dedication. No more exclusiveness or money; you just have to have a brain.

Though I've always questioned the time and scale behind that. For the power bill every month, just for folding at home, I could buy about 10 million grains of rice.

Well we can't just say 'send 10 million grains of rice to this adress and get your prize', can we? F@H helps a lot, but 100K points is enough. We need to be more diverse with rewards.

Freerice however is quite simple to macro.

Freerice is way to easy to cheat on. It'd be to easy for somebody to macro it. With f@h you can't really cheat on it.

    But, awesome idea, nikc!

That would take absolutely forever for me. Lower it to 250,000? But I like the idea.

Agreed. Maybe 225,000 is even better

Well, the idea of a higher amount of points is to encourage people to continue folding. Though people should really fold for the real cause of F@H, and not for prizes. But the prizes are a good was to get people to fold.

Great idea, but I think more people stop after 5,000 than 100,000.

If it's activity you're looking for I think a reward at 25,000 would do more than one at 500,000, just my .02 cents.

I do think a reward at 500,000 would be cool though.

This, a reward of 50k Would be better.
Waiting for 100k is way too much, but 500k? Gidins me?
Yeah, yeah, sure, it's about curing the cancer,
but I doubt a little people would fold if there were no rewards,
90% of the people are folding for the rewards, and 50% of that are folding for crown.
It's easy for you to say, Nikc.

There's a few points I was trying to make, and I'll make them now. First, prizes have been around for over three years now, and the average computer has probably almost doubled or more in terms of ppd. Back when cowboys first came out as a reward, very, very few people had them and even folding that 100k points was a pretty big accomplishment in itself. Now, there are 499 people that have a cowboy, and almost all of them have very near 100k points. Only 17 people, on the other hand, have 500k points. The main idea of this reward would be to encourage people to fold more once they've gotten a cowboy, not to get to 50k. I know that this would annoy people that can't even fold a cowboy, but such is life. If everyone had a cowboy or crown, what would be the point, they wouldn't be an accomplishment anymore.

Proud to be one of the 17 C:

And you have a point Nick. If EVERYBODY were to stop at 5,000, then we'd have around 10 Million, not 200 Million, and with only 500 cowboys, and the increasing number of fast-folding computers becoming cheaper and cheaper, I'd raise one of the milestones myself, maybe the +3 ranks to 2,500, add something at 50,000, and something at 500,000. Maybe, if needed, another something at 1,000,000. Because with the speed of PCs these days, I'm hitting a million in 4 months roundabout, and during the wintertime, I can do that in 3 months. The point is, you can easily, with a $1250 budget these days, make a powerhouse folder that can fold 40,000 PPD running 24/7. Too bad my dad is stupid enough to OC it, which IS dangerous. It's because of the people that still fold past 100,000: rips555, deathbygabe1, PrinceCharming, Jiggmin, Fred the Giant Cactus, me, and some others, that we are rank 87 today, and rank 84 in a week.

Need +1 or +2 ranks every 20k you get between 5k and 100k to encourage people to continue with the cures to cancer.

(and Armour Body was my idea)

Well, I think the initial idea for a body piece that acted as the crown did was my idea, and the name was yours.
