Thread: New folding@home reward for 500k points?

  1. #1

Default New folding@home reward for 500k points?

I've brought this up before, but I thought that it could use reviving. Many people stop folding because they hit 100k and stop. A good way to combat this would be to make a reward for 500k points, such as an armor body piece that acts like a crown does, so you could use it with the cowboy.

    Any other suggestions/thoughts/ideas?

    Haha yes first post.

I think that would be a good idea Nick. An armour body would be a cool piece to have.

Nah, that would make rewards WAY too exclusive. I think that cowboy is enough. Lets have a freerice reward instead.

That would take absolutely forever for me. Lower it to 250,000? But I like the idea.

Well, with the way computers are progressing, a computer that gets 50k ppd will cost less than $1000 soon, which would get that reward in barely less than a week. And a computer that even gets a tenth of that will still get it in barely more than three months.

Well, the idea of a higher amount of points is to encourage people to continue folding. Though people should really fold for the real cause of F@H, and not for prizes. But the prizes are a good was to get people to fold.

Great idea, but I think more people stop after 5,000 than 100,000.

If it's activity you're looking for I think a reward at 25,000 would do more than one at 500,000, just my .02 cents.

I do think a reward at 500,000 would be cool though.

Well, I'm certainly not opposed to both!

Need +1 or +2 ranks every 20k you get between 5k and 100k to encourage people to continue with the cures to cancer.

(and Armour Body was my idea)

Well, I think the initial idea for a body piece that acted as the crown did was my idea, and the name was yours.

Which is why freerice rewards would be a better alternative. It feeds people in Africa, and it doesn't matter if you have a fast or expensive computer. It just takes loads of dedication. No more exclusiveness or money; you just have to have a brain.

Though I've always questioned the time and scale behind that. For the power bill every month, just for folding at home, I could buy about 10 million grains of rice.

Well we can't just say 'send 10 million grains of rice to this adress and get your prize', can we? F@H helps a lot, but 100K points is enough. We need to be more diverse with rewards.

Honestly, I don't think that many people would reach it in a reasonable time, even with the progress of computers.
Like Asilva said, it'd probably be better to have a reward at 25k/50k instead, but I don't see any harm in both.

As for freerice rewards, even though in theory it's a good idea, I'm strongly opposed to this.
It's so easy to find and use scripts that answer questions automatically, and really defeats the purpose.

My point is that FreeRice is a poor use of time. Even if you assume you get around 30k grains per hour, you are basically getting about 10 cents of rice per hour, and I can easily get more than ten cents an hour just looking for coins on the ground.

Good point, I have to agree with you there. There just has to be some prize that can be earned by anybody, helps society, and doesn't put your electriciy bill through the roof.

    25,000, 250,000(?) & 500,000.
    Other than that, agreed.

It's a good idea with another reward but an armor body and a cowboy for example would be overpowerd.

You're saying cowboy isn't overpowered already?
