Possessive Pronouns

Rate this Entry
I keep typing in "it's" when I mean "its".
Rather annoying, and I find it rather strange that all nouns use an apostrophe but "it" does not. After thinking about it, though, I realized that "his" and "hers" don't use them either. Maybe that will help me remember.

(For those of you who do not know, "it's" is a contraction meaning "it is", while "its" is the possessive form of "it".)

    "It's a personal matter."
    "The beast retracted its fangs."

I find it confusing too, so I usually end up using the wrong form. I should just stick to one form on the internet for consistency

It used to have an apostrophe, but it was dropped about a century ago.
